What is a Public Administrator?
The position of Public Administrator is created by Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 194. When someone dies in Massachusetts, but doesn't leave a will and has no family, the Public Administrator gathers and protects the decedent's assets.
The Public Administrator tries to find family of the deceased, and distribute assets to those survivors. If a family member cannot be found, then the assets are distributed to the Treasurer of the Commonwealth for safekeeping.
The Governor appoints Public Administrators for a term of five years.
